"you're the bad guy. cause, believe it or not, your existence is a crime."

― Sans TS!Underswap

Sans is the brother of Papyrus and a major character in TS!Underswap. Under the alias Crossbones, he is a vigilante superhero sworn to protect the Starlight Isles from danger, and is the arch nemesis of the dastardly Koffin-K. He is the first monster the protagonist interacts with upon exiting Ruined Home, and serves as the main boss of the area.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

As his vigilante persona Crossbones, he wears brown boots with gray tips, dark blue sweatpants with two light blue stripes on each side, a light blue jacket with grey sleeves adorned with two bones arranged to shape a cross (possibly his logo while under the Crossbones persona), a blue cape, and a light blue mask to conceal his identity.

Off duty, he looks considerably similar to his Undertale counterpart, but with a few changes, like his hoodie having drawstrings and his slippers being pink instead of white/gray.

When either serious or angry, Sans' pupils will disappear, a detail that was also shown in Undertale.

Personality[]

As the masked vigilante Crossbones, he is very serious and dutiful in his heroic efforts of protecting the Starlight Isles and it can be assumed that the same could be said for capturing humans. However, the names for some of his superhero gear can sound somewhat immature, mainly his "bed sheet of justice" and "Punishment Shack", and puts on a dramatic and stunning persona when he's wearing the mask. Crossbones prefers to keep his identity a secret and seems to be rather worried about his identity being exposed.

When off duty as his civilian persona, Sans, he tends to be laid back and a joker, who also knows how to deal with his brothers' child-like outbursts. He also likes pranks, especially when it's using Papyrus' own gadgets against him. He may act different while he's off duty to avoid drawing in any suspicion. However, he shares his identity with those he trusts, with Papyrus being a notable example, whom he likes to spend time with. He will also reveal himself as Sans to the protagonist towards the end of Starlight Isles on a Neutral route by removing his mask shall they prove themself a good person. He follows this up by saying they're always welcome to his home shall they not go through with their adventure and even offers them to hang out at his Punishment Shack.

As mentioned above, humor and comedy are traits Sans showcases both in and out of costume, as his encounters with enemies such as Koffin-K and his henchmen show him taking the matter rarely, if not at all, seriously. He only really seems interested in making sure no harm comes from their mischief shall it ever happen and humors them in doing so. Other scenarios have Sans wearing a fake mustache along with his mask, riding the "Crossmobile" (a small tricycle) during a race, and repeatedly exchanging 1G with the protagonist over changing the channel on his TV until they put the money in their mouth so he won't take it back.

That being said, Sans takes his role as the protector of the Starlight Isles very seriously when push comes to shove. He does not like the idea of murder, hence why he prefers harmless gag-like gadgets over real weapons. He is acutely aware if the protagonist has hurt any monsters and isn't afraid to confront them over their actions. He is also very observant, as shown on the Ruthless Route, Sans will notice the dust on the protagonist's clothes before confronting them. Further adding to that, he will drop his humorous side as means of getting across how serious the situation is, which immediately gets Harry and Larry to comply after a foolish attempt at provoking the protagonist.

Main Story[]

Demo 1.0[]

At the beginning of Starlight Isles, he will give a short speech about the player's behavior depending on which route they took once they arrive in a clearing. He will then appear behind them and brandish his ketchup gun, ending the demo.

In the True Pacifist post-credits scene, he appears wearing his casual outfit alongside his brother, Papyrus. He briefly discusses the future of the game, comforting Papyrus on the wait until his "grand reveal."

Sans has made an agreement with Asriel (known as the pen name "A.S Dreamer") to create official comic books that "accurately" portray Crossbones' many heroic adventures. [1]

Demo 2.0[]

At the beginning of Starlight Isles, he will give a short speech about the player's behavior depending on which route they took once they arrive in a clearing. He will then appear behind them and brandish his ketchup gun, his next bit of dialogue depending on your current route.

If pursuing the Compassion Route, he goes on a speech about how the player will be "judged" by Crossbones, before forgetting the rest of it and ad-libbing with a pun, frustrating Papyrus. He then leaves on with his grappling hook upon seeing his signal. When Harry and Larry appear to steal a large crystal and antagonize the human, Crossbones appears to protect them, with Papyrus scaring them away. Throughout the area, Crossbones will put Chara through "tests" such as a race and how they interact with the area's monsters, both generic and important like Muffet and Koffin-K. After reaching the end of Starlight Isles, Crossbones initially lets Chara go as they have done nothing wrong, but is convinced by Papyrus to fight them as he set up the entire arena for them. Afterwards, it turns out the fight was for a movie, but before Chara leaves, Crossbones reveals the story of the Underground's Queen, and asks what they will do once they reach her. Noting that Chara's "answers" aren't really their own, he leaves, but not before revealing his identity as Sans the Skeleton and states that if nothing works outs, they are welcomed at Stardust Isles.

You have the option to hang out with Sans after the fight, where in Sans' "punishment shack" you try (and fail) at striking conversations or using the "hangout guide". After another race against him as Crossbones with Koffin-K's support, Papyrus appears with an old arcade machine called "Simulated Violence" for Sans and Chara to play, only for Sans to play it with his brother instead, all while stating he appreciates how much Papyrus does for him and enjoys being a superhero. After that, the hang out ends.

If pursuing a Evacuation Neutral, he gives a shorter speech before leaving with his brother to help evacuate monsters. When Harry and Larry try to antagonize Chara due to not thinking they are the human, Crossbones lies about their being free ice cream at the evacuation point, prompting them to take off. At the end of Starstruck Village, Crossbones will appear as Sans to fight the human. All the while, notes that Chara's actions in the previous area still have consequences. If Chara spares Sans at the end of the fight, Sans lets them by, but tells Chara to never return. If however, they attack Sans at the end of the fight, he tosses their currently equipped weapon off the cliff they are fighting on, saying this might help them "make smarter decisions in the future", before bringing them to 1 HP and leaving.

On a Ruthless Route, he will tell the human they are in for a bad time before leaving. When Harry and Larry antagonize Chara due to not thinking they are the killer human, Crossbones uses his powers to teleport them away before Chara can kill them. Once the kill count for Starlight Isles is exhausted, Crossbones prevents Chara from leaving to Crystal Springs, using his powers to keep Chara in place and stall for time by fighting them while telling a spiel about how he is secretly a runaway from another universe due to causing his relative to be killed in a lab accident, and how Chara is an "agent" for multiversal beings. Once he admits it to being false, Alphys contacts Crossbones telling that the evacuation was successful, and that he should escape. During the second part of the fight, Crossbones' "identity" as Sans the Skeleton is revealed, and he starts using trickery attacks to beat Chara. After Chara survives everything Sans could throw at them, he seemingly gives up after his last ditch attack was avoided, at which point Chara must try to kill him, as sparing will allow him to kill Chara with another trick (unless you intentionally miss every attack throughout the fight, in which case you will get the ACT to Back Down, causing Sans to actually spare the human, and setting you on an Evacuation Neutral Route). However, at the last moment, Sans replaces himself with a cardboard cutout before escaping, though Chara, and everyone else for that matter, assumes "Crossbones" to be dead.

Trivia[]

  • Crossbones calls his cape "the bed sheet of justice." [2]
  • On the side, Sans sells "super dogs" as Crossbones merchandise. [3]
  • After defeating his enemies, Crossbones sends them to "the punishment shack" to think about what they did wrong. [4]
  • Sans's superhero outfit went through many iterations before his current "Crossbones" identity (4 of them are only seen in game). At one point, he called himself "Super Sans" [5] [6].
  • All of Sans's previous designs are considered canon (4 of them are only seen in game), having been each of his "prototype suits."
    • The earlier prototype sprites, "Crossbones Origins", were just a matching costume for a party that was "just a starting point for the redesigns" according to Sans.
    • Crossbones Alpha was created mainly by Papyrus because the costume was "too unsubtle". After learning more about superhero comics, it was scrapped because it was "not unsubtle enough". Sans' contribution was the crossbones mark on the outfit.
    • Super Sans was mainly him in his regular attire with just the mask, and his shirt a bit more tucked in.
    • Magical Boy Sans was a potential costume made by Alphys and Asriel's contributions.
  • There will be a series of official Crossbones Comics that exist in-universe, which will also be featured as online comics. They may or may not also be featured as in-game collectibles, too. [7]
  • The bones on his drawstrings are based off of the official Fangamer hoodie. It is unknown if the hoodie's other features have been adapted, however.
  • Unlike Undertale Papyrus wanting to get into the Royal Guard, Sans has no interest in joining the Royal Navy and flies solo instead.
  • Currently, the only monsters who know Crossbones' secret identity are Papyrus, Asriel and Alphys.
  • He shares the same name of the vigilante Crossbones from the Marvel comics. Ironically, the latter is a villain instead of a hero.
  • Sans's casual outfit is nearly identical to his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Crossbones overworld death pose

Dead-bones

  • Sans' "death" sprite upon being shot by Koffin-K references the infamous Family Guy death pose.
  • Their mail box consists of only a few messages from the Koffin-K in their mailbox, shared with Papyrus's mailbox trying to get them free with a bunch of their messages in.
  • Crossbones old sprite seems to be based on the original design of Underswap Sans just with a cross.
  • Most of Crossbones' gadgets were developed by Papyrus as a way to help in his pursue of crime [8] [9].
  • At some point of development, Koffin-K would have ''hypnotized'' Crossbones and turn him into his supervillain minion ''Mr. S''. This was scrapped because the concept was too ambitious for the developers to implement [10].
    • The design of Mr. S was inspired by Mr. L from Super Paper Mario and Darkwing Duck from Disney.
